Charles Island is a 14-acre wooded island sitting about half a mile off Milford, Connecticut, in Long Island Sound — you anchor off and dinghy in to explore. The island has a wild, isolated feel despite being so close to shore, and it's a serious nesting site for Connecticut waterbirds, so expect herons, egrets, and terns in season. At low tide, a natural sandbar connects the island to Silver Sands State Park on the mainland, which makes for a striking scene from the water.
